Carbon Reduction Plan

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Mercian Surgical is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2023

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

Baseline of emissions is as the business currently stands without actively attempting to reduce our carbon footprint.

The business historically has always actively implemented actions to be more eco-friendly without even considering net zero. These actions include, reducing paper waste, always trying to use materials that can be recycled (if they do not have a detrimental impact on product) and implement water filtration system to reduce plastic waste.

Emissions reduction targets

For 2024 we used the NatWest Carbon Planner to more accurately calculate our carbon footprint. This tool has provided us with valuable insights into our emissions, allowing us to make informed decisions on reducing our environmental impact.

Because of this tool, our reported figures are now more accurate, with our carbon output calculated at 1.56k tCO₂e, demonstrating a significant drop from our initial reporting. This number is more precise, enabling us to implement more meaningful and measurable changes.

Benefits of using the NatWest Carbon Planner:

  • Improved Accuracy: Provides a detailed and reliable assessment of our carbon footprint.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Helps identify key areas where emissions can be reduced.
  • Cost Efficiency: Highlights opportunities to lower energy consumption and operational costs.
  • Sustainability Planning: Supports long-term strategies for reducing environmental impact.

By leveraging this tool, we are committed to making meaningful changes towards a more sustainable future.

To continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 1100 tCO2e by end of 2030. This is a reduction of 29%

Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2023 baseline. We are unable to determine the carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes due to not having a baseline in place when initially implemented. The percentage reduction estimated is approximately, a 5%ge reduction and these measures are in effect.

Future Initiatives

  • Being compliant to ISO 14001:2015
  • Facilitating the change to electric vehicles and implementing charge points within the work environment, thus encouraging staff to change over to more eco-friendly vehicles.
  • Promoting the use of Teams and other electronic communication methods to reduce travel and diesel emissions.
  • We will engage with suppliers and manufacturers to reduce their emissions by setting targets, providing incentives for low-carbon practices, and collaborating to implement sustainable solutions.
  • We will encourage low-carbon transportation by promoting the use of electric vehicles, reducing the need for transportation by sourcing locally, and using more efficient logistics practices.
  • We will aim to go paperless.

Declaration and Sign Off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard[1] and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting[2].

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard[3].

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
